Social Media

I just completed a social media class at MIT. The class participants and organizers were wonderful, passionate, and smart people who helped me propel my social media skills to the next level. In addition to a few lectures the class also participated in a project. The goal of the project(s) was to to promote a subject using social media. The class created two social media sites. One is to promote NGO’s (non-governmental organizations) My NGO and the other is for MIT created applications MIT Top Apps. Please take a moment to visit the two URLs.

The objective was to learn all the different social media mediums and connect them so that all the information about the subject could be found in multiple areas.  The different mediums will allow other users the ability to interact and provide more context (e.g. the social part).

What would social media look like for business operations. For example, how could it improve the buy pay function of an organization. Lets take the buy function for now. Right now most organizations buy (procure) items via credit card or purchase order. Given the organizations culture they may need to get authorization or can purchase what they need  outright. For the most part the information moves from requisitioner to procurement, a hierarchical movement, very siloed. But what if others could see what you are buying and why.
